Prepare for OnPremises installation
Preparation for installation includes:
- Deciding on the application installation variant.
- Determining which extensions are required for configuration.
Installation variants
Installation on the OnPremises environment can be performed in various variants. The table below describes what is associated with the selection of a specific installation variant.
| Decision | Option | Effects |
|---|---|---|
| Security | Without SSL | Allows for uncomplicated installation on development/test environments. Not recommended for production environments. Installation without the use of SSL certificates causes communication over the unsecured http protocol. |
| With SSL | Recommended for production environments. Encrypts the communication with the application (https). | |
| Application account | System account | The application runs on the built-in standard local Windows accounts (LocalSystem for sites, ApplicationPoolIdentity for web applications on IIS). To establish the connection with databases, database users’ accounts in SQL Server have to be created; the database’s user name and password are stored in the configuration. SQL Server must have SQL Server Authentication mode enabled. |
| Domain account | The application works on a selected domain account (both websites and pools of web applications on IIS). The application connects to SQL Server databases with a domain account and Windows authentication. When using AD as a user and/or role provider, the application connects to AD using a domain account. The password for the domain account is not stored in the configuration of the application components. | |
| Installation method | Local | The installation is performed on the server after logging in to it, e.g. via a remote desktop. All operations must be performed directly on the server. |
| Remote | Installation is performed from the user's local computer. The user must have administrator rights on the server; PowerShell Remoting must be enabled on the server. The user performs all operations on the user's local computer, and the application remotely executes commands to the target server. |
Configuration of the application extensions
Depending on what additional functionality the application uses, additional environment parameters need to be configured. The table below shows which additional parameters require configuration for the application.
| Extension | Description |
|---|---|
| Automatic e-mail sending | The application that automatically sends e-mails requires an SMTP server to be configured; to install the application, the server access parameters should be passed on as described in the next section. |
| Integrated Windows login | The application to which you can log in automatically using your domain account (Single sign-on) requires configuration of login via AD as described in the next section. |
